RIDING UP THE OLD CHISMN TRAIL--1887

A True Story

     As I'm now an old man ____ years old, and an old bachelor, and not much work I can do any more, I have decided to wile away the time writing this little story.

   Before starting up the Trail I would like to mention a few things that happened before that time.  When I was a y9ung fellow about 21 or 22 I decided to leave the farm and my old home in Missouri, where I was born and riased and go to Texas.  Well, I went over to talk to Bob Kinkade, my best friend and chum.  I told him that I was going to Texa.  He said "What for"?  I said "To join the Cowboys.:  He said, "I'm going to go with you."  Well, that sure did sound good to me, so we decided for sure that night that we would go.  The next day we stated to get ready.  we each had a good horse and we bought a wagon, a wagon sheet and bows and in a few days we were ready to start for Texas, in our covered wagon.
   In the mean time one of our neighbors who lived up the Creek decided to take his family and go with us.  His name was George Blanton and he was sure a fine fellow.

   The next morning our wagon were ready and we got ready to start and when we were telling all the folks goodbye I remember my Father came up to and said, "HJohn, there is only two things I want to say to you, pay your debts and keep good company".  Well, I have always tried to pay me debts and have kept good company--part of the time.  My mothere's last words were "What ever you do don't join the
